2020 Awards Winners Announced

The valued Food Drink Devon Awards celebrate the very best Devon has to offer by recognising our most respected and influential artisan food and drink producers and establishments.

During these unprecedented times we have altered our usual Awards Scheme into 6 main categories.  These celebrate businesses who have worked hard to adapt and continue to trade throughout these uncertain times but still manage to maintain Quality, Sustainability and Provenance, the use of fresh local and in season produce, having good customer service and supporting their local community and businesses.

Employee of the Year

Sandra Lambert, Carters Deli.  Judges said Sandra is well known and valued by generations of customers, holding different positions and responsibilities over her 56 years of service, what an achievement!  During lockdown she worked over her employed hours and helped deliver goods on foot to the local community.  Her employers hold her in very high esteem.

Food Product of the Year

Judge Chef Chris Shervile commented “I was delighted to be asked to help FDD judge the products that had been submitted for the annual food awards and I found it heartening to find such quality among the entrants. It has been, without me needing to say it, a difficult year for everyone in our business; my normal work has been decimated, so I turned to a takeway service from my home to meet the numbers and so, it appears, have other members of FDD, using this time to try new ideas, flavours and products. It is the determination, a particular mindset of independent business owners to use this period to improve and evolve that will see us through as an industry....blind tastings are fun!

Well done to all the entrants, I hope our judging gave the respect and recognition to your efforts”.

Drink Product of the Year

Judge Adrian Tierney-Jones (Exeter-based award-winning journalist who writes about beer, pubs and restaurants) commented “This was my first time judging for Food Drink Devon and I found it a thoroughly well-organised event. My fellow judges and I blind-tasted a variety of alcoholic beverages, including beer, cider and spirits and we were all impressed with the quality of the products, the flavours, aromatics and appearances. With such a wide breadth of excellent drinks, all I can say is — lucky old Devon”!

Judges said this beer had good body, a long finish and was very exciting especially as a low alcohol beer.

Eatery of the Year

The Globe Inn, Beaford.  Judges said this village pub showed exceptional dedication and support to the community in these unpredictable and unprecedented times.  This included a takeaway and delivery service, free meals for village residents over the age of 70, organising collection and delivery of prescriptions, shopping, produce boxes and beer from local producers, all of which allowed them to keep in contact with members of the village who were self-isolating to make sure no one felt alone.  The pub became the central hub for organising support in the village and is a worthy winner of Eatery of the Year.

Retailer of the Year

Veyseys Butchers.  Judges said they have worked tirelessly this year and when lockdown was announced they provided a 100% home delivery service.  Turning an entire business around overnight, investing in additional local staff and equipment to provide and accommodate the community and beyond with high quality produce from local farmers and still offer a quality service to ensure every order was delivered on the day the customer requested.

Business of the Year

Over-viewing all the judging categories and confirming the winners Stuart Elford, Chief Executive of Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce commented “I am amazed and humbled by the lengths people have gone to, how they have adapted so impressively and how passionate they are to deliver a quality and dependable service in these unprecedented times, I commend all the entrants”.

The Postal Pantry

Judges said this family run business started during lockdown as they realised it was an especially challenging time for local businesses and they recognised the vital need to keep them thriving.  Whilst also providing an online delivery service for customers in the community for their pantry essentials, local and fresh produce, stocking products which are packaged in recyclable or biodegradable packaging. Elderly or vulnerable people were encouraged to telephone so they could give them support, chat and make them feel they weren’t alone.
