Mother and son team Sue & Robin Hudson had a very clear vision of how they wanted the shop to look and feel (whilst not losing the charm of the old building) when they took over new ownership in 2012. They are not disappointed with the results and neither are their customers. "So many people have been thrilled and compliment us on who light, airy and pretty the shop now looks and their repeat shopping trips prove they like what we are selling too!" say Sue.
Robin has an artistic background and a great interest in design, so the colours, logo, staff uniforms and packaging were very important and have been very carefully thought out. Sue and Robin chose the artichoke logo as it is an unusual food-related motif and its colours, soft green with a hint of purple, are echoed everywhere in the shop. Also a chef, Robin initially trained at the famous Ballymaloe Cookery School near Cork and has worked at such prestigious restaurants as Bell's Diner in Bristol, Gidleigh Park in Chagford and Riverford Field Kitchen near Totnes. His passion for food and his great skill results in mouth-watering dishes. A neat, open kitchen has been built at the back of the shop so customers can see and smell the wonderful soups, tarts, salads etc. that Robin is cooking. This adds a bit of theatre to the shop and certainly whets the appetite! Sue & Robin felt that this was a more interesting use of the space in the shop rather than adding a seating area (as so many delicatessens do these days) and it meant Robin could cook whilst still being very involved in the shop itself.
Robin & Sue are passionate about the products they are now stocking and are constantly searching for new and unusual items to tempt their customers. They are particularly keen to showcase the wonderful products made locally - a fantastic range of local cheeses provided by a specialist cheese supplier and producer who has his own cave to age some of the cheese, air dried ham and salamis from Cornwall, locally smoked fish and chicken, delicious cakes from Exeter, French style macarons from Honiton, tea picked in Cornwall,, delicious “best ever” sausage rolls and pasties made locally and cooked fresh every day, fairtrade coffee roasted in Modbury – as well as an outstanding selection of the very best delicatessen products from around the world.
