The Bear and Blacksmith, Chillington, named Best Pub in Devon

The Bear and Blacksmith in Chillington has been named Best Pub in Devon by the 2019 National Pub and Bar Awards. The pub is one of 94 county champions which have been selected on overall best practice across a number of operational categories and will be officially crowned at a red carpet celebration at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly in London on Wednesday 22 May.

Restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, will host the grand final where 15 Regional Winners will also be announced, as well as the esteemed accolade – the overall National Pub & Bar of the Year.

Malcolm Church, landlord of The Bear and Blacksmith, said: “We are a local pub that serves locally sourced, seasonal food that everyone can enjoy. But we’re a drinking pub too, and our customers seem to appreciate that. We’re looking forward to the final in London next month and to think we’re in the running for Best Pub in the South West or overall National Pub & Bar of the Year makes it all the more exciting.”

The National Pub & Bar Awards aims to put the finest on-trade businesses across the UK in the spotlight, showcasing just how diverse and creative the hospitality industry really is.

“Selecting this year’s 94 County Winners has been nothing short of inspiring,” says Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which organises the awards. “From idyllic countryside pubs to inner city cocktail bars, this is the most eclectic and exciting industry in the world. It’s a privilege to help these businesses get the recognition they deserve.”
