For the last 30 years Curworthy Cheese has been lovingly handmade at Stockbeare Farm, situated in the mid Devon countryside, in the shadow of Dartmoor by the reknowned artisan cheesemaker Rachel Stephens. Rachel has recently (April 2017) been joined in the business by her son-in-law (Richard Drake) who is committed to continuing the long and proud family tradition of cheesemaking at Curworthy.
The areas unique micro-climate is perfect for grass growing and producing the finest quality milk which is collected from neighbouring dairy farmers, delivered overnight and pasteurised the next morning to make this award winning cheese.
The Traditional Curworthy recipe is a full fat hard cheese with a creamy light buttery taste when young and developing into a full flavoured mellowness when aged. The curd after pressing overnight in traditional presses is then matured in special temperature controlled ripening rooms. No colouring or preservatives whatsoever are added - except salt which enhances the flavour and lengthens the cheese's life.
The core range of cheeses are available in a various sizes from the small (454g) truckles which are mild and creamy culminating in the 4.5kg Devon Oke product which has a fuller more intense flavour. We also have a variety of naturally flavoured cheeses in which we use only the freshest possible ingredients that we add to the fresh curd before moulding and pressing (flavours include Dartmoor Chilli, Spring Onion, Mustard and Real Ale, and Cumin).
In addition two of our newer products which are fast gaining in popularity are our oak smoked cheese called Devon Smoake and our latest addition a soft mold ripened cheese called Devon Maid.
Curworthy Cheeses are available from all good specialist cheese shops, delicatessens and wholesalers. It is also available directly from the producer at local country/agricultural shows, events and food fairs across the South West along with several regular Farmers Markets across Devon.
