Greedy Goose, Ben Palmer at Glazebrook House Hotel
Glazebrook House in Devon, recently named Best Boutique Hotel in the country at the VisitEngland Excellence Awards, is celebrating the return of award-winning chef Ben Palmer to its kitchens.
Ben was the head chef when the nine-bedroom hotel opened in May 2014, devising the menus and setting the standards that helped Glazebrook House in South Brent win a string of awards and a place in the Good Food Guide.
He met owner Pieter Hamman after a chance encounter at a pub neaby, while Pieter was overseeing building work at the hotel. Ben was in the pub kitchen near closing time when he was told a customer wanted to order food. Ben obliged and it resulted in Pieter enjoying “the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life.”
Ben then advised on the design of the kitchens at the Glazebrook House Hotel and helped launch the hotel. But a couple of months after opening, Ben had an offer he couldn’t refuse – to buy Tanners restaurant in Plymouth from his old Barbican Kitchen bosses, Chris and James Tanner. He took over Tanners at the Prysten House in Plymouth, renamed it The Greedy Goose and five weeks later all his hard work was rewarded with two AA rosettes.
Now Ben is returning to run the restaurant in partnership with Pieter Hamman to further develop the food side of the award winning hotel.
