Summerskills Brewery

Established at a Bigbury vineyard in 1983 we have been brewing in Plymstock since 1985. We select malt the finest English malt and hops to produce a range of bottle and cask conditioned ales.

The brewery was established by Adam Summerskill at his Bigbury vineyard in 1983. He relocated a couple of times before settling in Plymstock in 1985 where the brewery has remained ever since. Some of the brewing equipment came from the Penrhos Brewery, whilst other parts were fabricated locally. Carl Beeson and Rick Wilson took over in 1990 and maintained the tradition of using the highest quality local ingredients wherever possible, which is still true today. Charles Faram in Herefordshire provide the English whole hops that are used in all of our beers, with the exception of one Slovenian aroma hop. In 2014 we produced Plymhop Ale using green hops grown right here in Plymstock.

Our beers are available in cask and bottle conditioned form and supplied to pubs, shops and restaurants in Plymouth and the South Hams. We also promote the fantastic produce of Devon to the rest of the UK through carefully selected wholesalers and a national pub operator.

The core range of cask beer consists of Start Point, Westward Ho!, Devon Dew and Bolt Head. In the colder months we brew South Star, better known as Indiana’s Bones and in summer First Light. Old favourites such as Whistle Belly Vengeance and Ninja appear with occasional brews reflecting the time of year, or in support of events and charities. Steve Martin at the Foxhound Brixton comes to brew his own beer “Redcoat” at the brewery, we brew Devon Frost in collaboration with the Queens Arms in Brixham and we produce "The Famous Mr Jones" for the Fisherman's Arms in Plymouth. The bottled range includes our Start Point, Westward Ho!, Best Bitter, Devon Dew, Bolt Head, First Light and Indiana’s Bones. In addition we bottle Bunker Hill in support of Royal Marines charities, Column Ale for the Devonport Guildhall and a coffee stout "Urban Brew" in collaboration with Owen’s Coffee at Modbury.
