The Husbandry School

The Husbandry School and its beautiful gardens are set in a stunning hilltop location just outside Ashburton, Devon. We offer a range of inspirational courses, produce local food for local people and provide chefs with high quality local produce. We are passionate about giving you the skills to grow your own food in a natural way and we love to take the odd, bizarre, nutritious and delicious out of the ground and in to the kitchen and grow lots of heritage varieties, keeping them alive and well. Our Salad bags with edible flowers are platinum award winning and we take great pride in producing all kinds of salad leaves to go alongside our Veg Bag Scheme.

We also have our own herds of Boer and Cashmere goats, producing healthy meat as well as fibres for felting and textile making. Pedigree Tamworth pigs, for bacon, pork sausages, gammon and of course some lovely sheep and lambs. Our animals are naturally reared according to Wholesome Food Association principles and practice and chefs, butchers and food lovers all praise our meat for being outstanding in terms of quality and taste.

We utilise our farm, vegetables and animals to teach individuals through our 'Reengage, Reinspire Programme'. We offer a therapeutic education placement in order to re-engage and re-inspire students with learning. Students experience a very structured and ordered day where the rules and need for action become very real and apparent i.e. hungry goats…everyone’s responsibility to feed them etc. This hands on approach, in our experience, allows the students very quickly to transfer this seen need for rules and taking personal responsibility for actions into the rest of their lives. Our curriculum includes subjects such as Animal Care, Land work, Nature Study and Conservation, Food, Nutrition and cooking and Mixed Media Arts including Textiles as well as offering core curriculum support for our students.

We also offer a wide variety of public courses at the weekends, each led by our team of knowledgeable tutors. Our courses are ideal for craft lovers who are looking to learn "old skills in new ways". We have a variety of courses on offer, including Leatherwork, Willow weaving, Cyanotypes (Printing with light), Felting and Woodworking. As well as courses in ancient husbandry skills, and Devon Hedge Laying and Stone Walling using natural materials. A full list of our courses and activities is available on our website.

We are passionate about giving you the skills to grow your own food. For those who are green fingered and keen to learn more about growing food in a natural and sustainable way, we have monthly volunteer days that allow you to get stuck in with land work, helping to care for our animals, gardening and growing.

Please visit our website to find out lots more about all of our projects, to sign up to our local Veg Bag Delivery Scheme or to book yourself on to one of our courses.
